Church bell business revived as a modern chiming watchmaker

Van Bergen, a historic watchmaker with roots dating back to 1795, is set to launch its first collection of chiming watches named Heero at the luxury showcase Top Marques in Monaco. Originally established as a manufacturer of church bells and carillon towers, the company was renowned in Europe for its craftsmanship until demand dwindled and it closed in 1980. The revival of Van Bergen under entrepreneur Erik Miejer aims to blend its long-standing legacy with modern watchmaking, featuring the largest gong ever installed in a wristwatch and a commitment to producing pieces that honor its historical significance. The initial collection will consist of 230 standard pieces and 50 special editions for the Monaco event, with a unique Monaco Edition wristwatch to be presented to Prince Albert II of Monaco. Retail prices for the Heero watches are set at €29,000, featuring 41mm titanium cases and innovative slim 5Hz movements. Miejer, who has extensive experience in watch retail and distribution, plans to market these watches through various global partnerships, targeting regions including the United States, Middle East, and Asia, while also supporting charitable initiatives through auctioned pieces.
