The COSC Releases Excellence Chronometer, its New, Stricter Standard in Chronometry
The COSC has introduced the Excellence Chronometer certification, raising standards in Swiss chronometry to enhance precision in timekeeping. This new certification features a daily rate tolerance of -2 to +4 seconds and includes tests for magnetic resistance up to 200 Gauss, along with evaluations that simulate real-life wear. As the landscape of watch certification evolves, COSC aims to remain relevant by adapting to modern needs and advancements in watch technology, which have significantly changed over the past fifty years. While the Excellence Chronometer certification marks an improvement over previous standards, it still falls short when compared to other industry benchmarks, such as Omega's Master Chronometer certification, which offers stricter precision and higher magnetic resistance capabilities. The COSC's new approach will begin pilot tests in March 2026, with full deployment expected by October 2026, ensuring that certified watches meet the enhanced criteria and expectations of today's consumers.
