Patek Philippe Acquires the World’s Oldest Watch Store, Beyer Chronometrie

Beyer Chronometrie, the world's oldest watch store with a history spanning 266 years, has been acquired by Patek Philippe and is set to close at the end of the year. This acquisition follows the passing of long-time owner René Beyer in 2025, who had no heir, leading to the business being passed to his sister, Muriel Zahn-Beyer. The store's prime location on Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse will be transformed into an expanded Patek Philippe boutique, which has been a partner of Beyer since it started carrying the brand in 1842. With the takeover, Beyer's multi-brand section will cease operations, although a third of the current employees will remain to staff the new boutique. Notably, the Beyer store's impressive watch museum, located in the basement, will not be included in the sale and is expected to be relocated to a new venue in Zurich. The closure of Beyer Chronometrie echoes the recent trend of luxury watch retail consolidation, similar to the sale of Bucherer to Rolex three years prior.

Buying Time Analysis: The acquisition of Beyer Chronometrie by Patek Philippe marks the end of an era for the world's oldest watch store, highlighting the ongoing consolidation in the luxury watch industry and the significance of heritage brands in a rapidly changing market.
