Swiss deploy charm offensive in bid to slash crippling Trump tariffs
Swiss ministers are currently engaging in discussions with U.S. officials in an effort to reduce the steep 39% tariffs imposed by President Trump on Swiss exports, which have significantly impacted the Swiss economy. Initial attempts by Swiss President Karin Keller Sutter to persuade Trump were met with resistance; however, a recent visit by Swiss business leaders bearing gifts seems to have improved the atmosphere. Following these discussions, Trump has hinted at the possibility of lowering the tariffs, potentially to 15%, aligning them with those of Switzerland's EU neighbors. In exchange for reduced tariffs, Swiss pharmaceutical companies have proposed building additional production facilities in the U.S., and Swiss International Airlines may consider shifting from Airbus to Boeing for their fleet. The urgency of the situation is palpable, as Swiss companies have already indicated potential layoffs if the tariffs remain unchanged. Influential figures such as FIFA President Gianni Infantino are being called upon to leverage their relationships with Trump to further advocate for Swiss interests.
