The French Connection: Trilobe’s Parisian Workshop
Gautier Massonneau, originally driven by a desire for a quality watch, is now on the verge of revitalizing industrial watchmaking in Paris with Trilobe. Alongside partner Volcy Bloch, they have transformed the brand from a design-led startup to a vertically integrated enterprise capable of producing its own movements. Trilobe aims to reclaim its place in a historically significant horological landscape, having previously been home to renowned watchmakers. The brand's X-Nihilo movement reflects their commitment to local production, with 80% of its components manufactured within Greater Paris, marking a significant step towards in-house manufacturing. The journey of Trilobe highlights a pragmatic approach to watchmaking, opting to centralize production to enhance feedback loops between assembly and R&D. Initially outsourcing to Switzerland, the brand has since expanded its capabilities and now employs a skilled team of watchmakers. Their latest creation, the Trente-Deux, showcases their first in-house movement while embodying a distinct visual identity. Beyond wristwatches, Trilobe is also exploring clockmaking, merging horology with contemporary art, as seen in their collaboration with artist Daniel Buren and the ambitious Le Temps Retrouvé. This evolution reflects a blend of creativity and industry, aiming to rebuild the legacy of French watchmaking.
