Roger Smith, a revered British watchmaker, is collaborating with the university to create a 2D molybdenum disulphide-based nano material that aims to significantly reduce friction in watch components, potentially extending service intervals to as much as 15 years. Despite previous attempts by various brands to introduce friction-reducing technologies, the concept of a completely lubricant-free watch remains largely unachieved. Many advancements have been made in watch components using materials like silicon and ceramic, but these often come with increased costs. A true breakthrough would require both technological innovation and a shift in mindset within the industry, as many watchmakers are resistant to rethinking established practices.
